What is Hypnotherapy and what conditions can it treat?

There are many myths about hypnosis. In fact, hypnosis is a naturally occurring state of consciousness that can be used with great therapeutic benefit. During hypnosis, the mind is more open to suggestion than usual. A trained therapist using hypnosis can assist the child to access inner resources which include helping the child feel more confident, calmer and more able to deal with fears. During therapy suggestions are made by a trained therapist, unique to the child's problems, which can be taken up by the unconscious mind to assist with symptoms that the child may be having. In general children respond extremely well to hypnotherapy and find it very enjoyable as well as beneficial. Hypnosis can be used for the following conditions

Irritable bowel syndrome and functional abdominal pain • Flares of inflammatory bowel disease via stress reduction • Academic Performance • Improved memory • Pain Management • Helping the child to deal with painful medical procedures • Fears and Phobias • Bullying • Stress Management • Management of Chronic disease • Enhancing Sporting Performance • Overcoming Exam nerves • Social Anxiety • Gaining Self-Confidence • Improving Motivation • Sleep Problems • Bed Wetting • Giving up habits e.g. nail biting • Pre / Post-surgical and Dental Procedures • Assisting overcoming Needle Phobia • Improve Public Speaking Performance

How many sessions will I need?

Typically 4 to 6 sessions (each session lasts about 50-60 minutes) are required but it may be more or less depending on the condition being treated. All patients will return to their referring practitioner for ongoing management of the child or adolescent after completion of hypnotherapy sessions unless deemed medically necessary to see another doctor.

What happens during a session?

Like all medical consultations a detailed history will be taken and a management plan tailored to the person will be outlined. Hypnotherapy will typically occur at the second session tailored specifically to the unique needs of the person and their problem. A recording of the session will be provided for practice at home between sessions.

Can anyone be hypnotised?

Nearly all patients can be hypnotised.

What are the side effects?

There are very few side effects of this therapy and most people find it an enjoyable and natural experience. Being cared for by a trained hypnotherapist ensures that if issues were to arise during the session they will be dealt with promptly.

Will I lose control?

Prior to any hypnotherapy being performed informed consent is obtained and the patient will be told about the suggestions that will be applied. This ensures that the individual understands they are in control of what will occur during the session.

Is this evidenced base medicine?

There is a large body of medical and psychological research which shows hypnotherapy to be beneficial in a wide array of conditions. Dr Webb's doctoral thesis contains a comprehensive reference list and a list of papers from the thesis and other research can be provided upon request. Copies of relevant papers may also be obtained upon request.
